How to Prepare for Your Professional Headshots in Jacksonville, Florida

Professional headshot of a man in a suit against a black backdrop

If your current headshot looks like it could pass for your internship photo from 20 years ago or you’re still using a cropped version of that one group picture only you looked good in, then it might be time for an update. Taking professional headshots doesn’t have to feel stiff or intimidating. At Jax Mini Sessions Studio located in Jacksonville, FL, our goal is to make the process simple, comfortable, and even enjoyable. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know before your session, from choosing the right outfit and preparing your hair and makeup, to communicating with your photographer, and knowing exactly what to expect when you arrive.

Whether you’re updating your LinkedIn profile, launching a new business, refreshing your company website, or simply investing in yourself, a headshot is often someone’s first impression of you. Long before you shake a hand or send an email, your photo is already communicating confidence, professionalism, and personality. So, let’s make it count!

Build Trust in Your Photographer

One of the best things you can do before your session has nothing to do with your outfit or your hair. It starts with choosing a photographer whose work you genuinely love.

Before booking, spend a few minutes looking through your Jacksonville Headshot Photographer’s portfolio. Pay attention to their editing style, lighting, posing, and the overall feel of their images. Ask yourself: Can I picture myself in these photos? If the answer is yes, you’re already setting yourself up for a successful experience.

Communication is Key

Once you’ve found a photographer you trust, be open to communication. The little details you might think aren’t important are often the very things that help us create images you’ll love.

Our Jacksonville in-house photographers will guide you through your session, but we also want to know what makes you feel your best. Some helpful things to mention before we begin include:

  • If you have a preferred side of your face.
  • If you have a cowlick or a section of hair that tends to do its own thing.
  • If there’s something you’re self-conscious about that you’d like us to be mindful of.
  • If there’s a particular smile or expression you naturally prefer.
  • If you wear glasses regularly and plan to include them in your photos.

The more we know, the better we can make small adjustments throughout your session to help you look and feel your best. On that note, don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you’re unsure about your outfit, wondering which backdrop would work best, or curious about how your images will be used, we’d much rather talk through it together than have you spend the session wondering.

Pro Tip: Avoid Decision Fatigue. Make important decisions before photoshoot day.

We recommend:

  • Choose your outfit (or outfits) ahead of time.
  • Steam or iron your clothing and leave it on a hanger.
  • Decide on your jewelry and accessories.
  • Know how you’d like to style your hair.
  • If you wear makeup, practice your look beforehand rather than experimenting that morning.
  • Clean your glasses if you plan to wear them.
  • Pack everything you’ll need the night before.

Walk into your session at our Jacksonville photo studio feeling confident in your choices rather than stressing over last-minute decisions.

What to Wear

Your outfit should complement your professional image, not distract from it. Choose clothing that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and polished while keeping the focus on your face.

  • Choose well-fitting clothing. Tailored clothing photographs best and helps you look polished and put together.
  • Keep necklines simple. Crew necks, collared shirts, blazers, and modest V-necks naturally draw attention to your face.
  • Don’t be afraid of patterns. Subtle patterns like pinstripes, small florals, or simple plaid can add interest, but avoid bold graphics and busy prints.
  • Wear colors you feel confident in. Neutral colors are always a safe choice for corporate settings, while a tasteful pop of color can showcase personality and complement your features.
  • Use layers to your advantage. Blazers, jackets, and cardigans add dimension and can completely change the look of an outfit without requiring a full outfit change, especially if you’re adding a pop of color.
  • Accessorize thoughtfully. Choose jewelry that lays flat and complements your outfit without becoming the focal point.
  • Classic watch over a smart watch. Wearing a watch is not necessary, but if you’re going to wear one, then traditional watches tend to photograph more timelessly than smartwatches. An exception is if the smartwatch is part of your everyday professional brand.
  • Avoid glare in glasses. If you need to wear glasses, that’s perfectly okay! Just be sure they’re clean and free of smudges. If your frames allow for it, removing the lenses can help eliminate glare.
  • Avoid loose undershirts and floppy collars. These can bunch up or become distracting in chest-up portraits.
  • Steam or iron your outfit the night before. Wrinkles are much easier to prevent than they are to edit later.
  • Bring a backup option. If you’re deciding between two outfits, bring both! We’re happy to help you choose what photographs best, or deliver photos in each option.

Hair, Makeup, & Grooming

A little preparation goes a long way. These small details can help you look and feel your best on session day.

Hair

  • Style your hair the way you normally would. Curl it, straighten it, blow dry it, or wear it naturally—just make sure it feels like you.
  • Tame flyaways. Hairspray, styling cream, or a lightweight hair oil can help keep frizz under control. We can edit a few flyaways, but it’s always best to start with a polished look.
  • Plan your haircut. We recommend scheduling haircuts or trims 3–5 days before your session. This gives your hair a little time to settle and ensures you’re comfortable styling it. This goes for grooming facial hair, too!

Makeup

  • Aim for an elevated version of your everyday look. You should still look like yourself, just camera-ready. Think business meeting, not wedding day!
  • Opt for cream or liquid products when possible. Heavy powder can sometimes appear dry or cakey under professional lighting.
  • Reduce shine. A light dusting of translucent powder is a great option for everyone, even if you don’t typically wear much makeup.

Skincare

  • Take care of your skin leading up to your session. Stay hydrated, moisturize, and stick to the routine that works for you.
  • Avoid trying new skincare products or treatments right before photo day. If you’re planning a facial or treatment you’ve never had before, schedule it at least 1–2 weeks in advance in case your skin reacts unexpectedly.
  • Avoid sunburns whenever possible. Red or irritated skin can be difficult to edit naturally.
  • If you normally get spray tans, schedule them about two days before your session. If you’ve never had one before, your headshot probably isn’t the best time to experiment.

Feel Good in Your Body

  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps your skin look fresh and healthy.
  • Avoid foods that you know make you feel bloated or sluggish. Feeling your best often translates into looking your best.
  • Get a good night’s sleep. Being truly rested is one of the easiest ways to feel more confident in front of the camera.

Editing is meant to enhance your photos, not completely transform them. The more prepared you arrive to your headshot photo session, the more natural and polished your final images will look.

What to Expect During Your Headshot Session

If you’ve never had professional headshots taken before, it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous. The good news is that you don’t have to know how to pose or what to do. That’s our job!

During your session, you can expect:

  • Guided posing from start to finish. We’ll tell you exactly where to stand, how to angle your body, where to look, and yes… even what to do with your hands.
  • Expression coaching. Sometimes the smallest adjustment to your smile, chin, or posture can make a huge difference, and we’ll coach you through it every step of the way.
  • Multiple backdrop options. Choose from white, black, gray, tan, olive green, or light blue backdrops to best fit your profession, personal brand, or company style.
  • Professional studio lighting. Our controlled lighting setup creates clean, consistent results no matter the weather or time of day.
  • Real-time image review. One of our favorite features is our tethered monitor setup, which allows you to see your images on a large screen as we photograph them. Together, we can make small adjustments to your pose, hair, clothing, or expression before you ever leave the studio.
  • A rolling mirror in the studio. Need to smooth your hair, straighten your blazer, or check your smile? We’ll have a full-length mirror right in front of you so you can make quick adjustments throughout your session.
  • Next-day turnaround. You’ll receive your professionally edited images quickly, so you can start using your new headshots right away.

BRANDING SESSIONS

If you’re looking for more than a traditional headshot, a branding session may be a better fit.

Branding sessions are longer, more customized experiences that tell the story of you and your business. Instead of a single backdrop, we’ll photograph you throughout the studio using multiple sets, outfit changes, props, and lifestyle imagery that can be used across your website, social media, and marketing materials.

We offer both a full one-hour branding session and a 20-minute mini branding session. Our one-hour session provides plenty of time for multiple outfits, studio setups, and a wide variety of images, making it ideal for a complete brand refresh. If you’re looking for something quicker, our 20-minute mini session is perfect for an efficient in-and-out experience while still giving you a beautiful gallery of professional images to elevate your brand.

A branding session is ideal if you:

  • Need a variety of images instead of one professional portrait.
  • Want behind-the-scenes or lifestyle content.
  • Need multiple photos for your website or social media.
  • Want diversity in outfits and studio setups.
  • Are building or refreshing your personal brand.
